In Spanish the pronoun se
is used in order to avoid specifying the person who is doing action of the verb. The pronoun se
is commonly used in signs or advertisements.
Se alquila una casa
(house for rent): you are indicating that someone rent a house, but that you either
don't know who that person is or don't choose to identify him or her.
Aquí
se habla español (Spanish is spoken here): you are indicating that someone
speaks Spanish, but that you either don't know who that person is or don't choose to identify him or her.
The passive construction is done by using se + the él, ella, usted, ellos,
ellas, ustedes form of the verb.

SINGULAR SUBJECT If the subject
is singular, the verb is conjugated in the third person singular (él/ella): Se vende pescado
en el supermercado fish is sold at the supermarket Se
sirve comida colombiana
Colombian food is served
PLURAL SUBJECT If the subject
is plural, the verb is conjugated in the third person plural (ellos/ellas): Se venden
pescados en el supermercado
fish are sold at the supermarket Se alquilan apartamentos
apartments for rent
