IMPERSONAL CONSTRUCTIONS WITH SE

LISTEN

In Spanish the pronoun se is used in order to avoid specifying the person who is doing action of the verb. The pronoun se is commonly used in signs or advertisements.

Se alquila una casa (house for rent): you are indicating that someone rent a house, but that you either don't know who that person is or don't choose to identify him or her.

Aquí se habla español (Spanish is spoken here): you are indicating that someone speaks Spanish, but that you either don't know who that person is or don't choose to identify him or her.

The passive construction is done by using se + the él, ella, usted, ellos, ellas, ustedes form of the verb.

SINGULAR SUBJECT
If the subject is singular, the verb is conjugated in the third person singular (él/ella):
Se vende pescado en el supermercado     fish is sold at the supermarket
Se sirve comida colombiana     Colombian food is served

PLURAL SUBJECT
If the subject is plural, the verb is conjugated in the third person plural (ellos/ellas):
Se venden pescados en el supermercado     fish are sold at the supermarket
