SPANISH DEMONSTRATIVE ADJECTIVES

DEMONSTRATIVE ADJECTIVES AND PRONOUNS

Demonstrative adjectives are used to point out people and things. All demonstrative adjectives come before the noun and agree in gender and number with the noun they modify. In Spanish there are three sets of demonstrative adjectives.

When the object or person is near to the person speaking:

LISTEN

ESTE     THIS
ESTOS     THESE
ESTA     THIS
ESTAS     THESE

Examples:

Este cuaderno es interesante
Estos libros son importantes
Esta camisa es blanca
Estas faldas son cortas

-este is used with masculine and singular nouns
-estos is used with masculine and plural nouns
-esta is used with feminine and singular nouns
-estas is used with feminine and plural nouns

this notebook is interesting
these books are important
this shirt is white
these skirts are short

When the object or person is farther away:

ESE     THAT
ESOS     THOSE
ESA     THAT
ESAS     THOSE

Examples:

Ese vestido es bonito
Esos zapatos son feos
Esa blusa es barata
Esas camisas son caras

-ese is used with masculine and singular nouns
-esos is used with masculine and plural nouns
-esa is used with feminine and singular nouns
-esas is used with feminine and plural nouns

that dress is pretty
those shoes are ugly
that blouse is cheap
those shirts are expensive

When the object or person is at a great distance from both the speaker and the person spoken to:

AQUEL     THAT OVER THERE
-aquel is used with masculine and singular nouns

AQUELLOS     THOSE OVER THERE
-aquellos is used with masculine and plural nouns

AQUELLA     THAT OVER THERE
-aquella is used with feminine and singular nouns

AQUELLAS     THOSE OVER THERE
-aquellas is used with feminine and plural nouns

Examples:

Aquel muchacho es de España
Aquellos muchachos son colombianos
Aquella muchacha es americana
Aquellas muchachas son de México

that boy over there is from Spain
those boys over there are Colombian
that girl over there is American
those girls over there are from Mexico
