USES OF PAST PARTICIPLE

LISTEN
Verbs conjugated in the past participle are used as the main verb to form the present and past perfect tenses. Ex:
Yo he comido mucho     I have eaten a lot
Yo había comido mucho     I had eaten a lot

Verbs conjugated in the past participle can be used as adjectives to describe a noun - they must match in gender and number with the noun they describe. Ex:
La señora sentada en la silla es mi madre
The lady seated on the chair is my mother

Past participle verbs are often used as adjectives in conjuction with the linking verbs: SER and ESTAR. Ex:
La fiesta fue divertida     the party was enjoyable
La tienda está abierta     the store is open

HOW PAST PARTICIPLE IS FORMED
To form the past participle, you drop the infinitive endings and add -ADO for -AR verbs and -IDO for -ER and -IR verbs. Using the right ending on a verb is very important.

PAY PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO THE ENDINGS!!!

Infinitive
Hablar (to talk)
Estudiar (to study)
Comer (to eat)
Conocer (to know)
Vivir (to live)
Preferir (to prefer)
Past participle
hablado
estudiado
comido
conocido
vivido
preferido

If the infinitive -er or -ir verb has two vowels, then in the past participle requires an accent mark on the i:

Caer (to fall): caído
Creer (to think/to believe): creído
Leer (to read): leído
r (to hear): oído
Rr (to laugh): reído
Traer (to bring): traído
